| Personal History | Renata Novotná was born out of strange happenstance. Her mother, Julia Suková, a bioresearcher from Earth met her father, Lieutenant Sorek, a Starfleet officer and exobiologist from Vulcan, while stationed at Starbase 12. The two briefly dated (as much as a human and a Vulcan can date) before Sorek was transfered to the USS Intrepid. Less than a month later, he perished in a shuttle accident, and thus never learned that he fathered a child. Julia, pregnant with her daughter, relocated to Earth, and settled in her hometown of Prague where her parents ran a tavern and brewed their own beer. Renata was born there on May 7, 2261. Julia soon met and married Jirí Novotná, a civil engineer, who became Renata's stepfather. The couple later had two children, Wojciech and Jakub, Renata's younger brothers. Raised on Earth by humans as a human, Renata has never learned or practiced any Vulcan customs and never dived herself into Vulcan culture. In fact, she always considered her "halfling" status, her weird-shaped ears, her green blood, her higher-than-average tolerance of high temperatures as kind of an annoying peculiarity which made her different from other children. Thus, she pretty much avoided exploring her Vulcan heritage. Renata and her mother tried to reach out to her paternal grandparents on Vulcan, but aside a bunch of letters, they never much acknowledged her existence. She even visited Vulcan once as a teen, but they refused to meet her. As a child, Renata was bright, intelligent, but also reckless with a fiery temper. She occassionally got into arguments and fights with other kids. To make use of her spare energies, her parents signed her to football (soccer) lessons at the age of 7. She played in local teams, such as Viktoria Žižkov until she was 16, but still practices the sport in her free time. Always being a bright student in nature sciences (she even won a science competition in high school), Renata decided to embark to Starfleet Academy and study to become a science officer, with the specialty of astrophysics. At the Academy, she met Kevin O'Malley, a command division cadet from Dublin, who she dated for three years, before breaking up. Renata graduated Starfleet Academy in 2284, and got assigned to the USS Congo as a fresh Ensign in the astrophysics department. Two years later she was transferred to the USS Lexington where she served for three years. In 2288, she participated in the charting of the Novarion Nebula at the edge of the Beta Quadrant, marked as an important scientific achievement in Starfleet history. The next year, Renata was a member of the Lexington research team which saved the 25,000 Federation colonists of Gamma Dragonis V by diverting the solar particles cascade due to struck the planet. For taking part in this achivement, she was promoted to Lieutenant JG and offered the position of assistant chief science officer on the USS Zhukov. Following a year-long service on the Zhukov, Renata was offered a post as chief science officer, her first ever as a department head, on the USS Ark Royal. She accepted the offer. |
