Personal History Sung Jin-Woo was born in Pyongyang, United Korea in 2265 to then-Captain Sung Il-Hwan and Park Kyung-He. Jin-Woo was the couple's first child, and when Jin-Woo was three, his younger sister, Jin-Ah, was born.

Jin-Woo spent much of his early life living in Pyongyang with his mother and younger sister, as his father was a full time Starfleet officer. Commodore Sung wanted his children to have a stable home life; something he never had growing up. In fact, upon his promotion to Commodore, Sung Il-Hwan requested a desk job at Earth Spacedock so that he could be home for dinner and be a constant in his children's lives. Jin-Woo respected and admired his father's dedication and desired to one day join Starfleet himself.

On his 18th birthday, Jin-Woo was accepted for Starfleet Academy. Though whether he was accepted on his own merits or because he had connections that would cost the recruiters their jobs if they denied him, he may never know. In the Academy, Jin-Woo wasn't the brightest bulb, and when he graduated in 2287 at the rank of Ensign, he was near the bottom of his class. Many of his peers and even instructors believed he wouldn't last long in Starfleet.

For the first two years of his Starfleet career, Jin-Woo was assigned as a tug pilot at the Manhattan shipyard. It wasn't a glamorous posting, but it taught him to respect the older ships that he often found himself towing into mothballs at Algonquin's reserve fleet.

In 2289, Jin-Woo was promoted to Lieutenant JG, and with this promotion, he was reassigned to the USS Lexington - A Miranda class starship which had been built to replace the USS Reliant, which had been lost in the creation of the Genesis planet. Jin-Woo rendezvoused with the Lexington in the middle of a patrol of the Klingon Neutral Zone. Helming a starship was much different to operating a simple yard tug, but Jin-Woo took to the transition well.

So well, in fact, that when he had been aboard the Lexington for less than a year, Jin-Woo found out that he had been reassigned once again: This time to the USS Ark Royal. Jin-Woo was surprised that a Constitution class cruiser wanted him at all, let alone as a Chief Helmsman, as he figured he had a good few years to go before he could even think about being assigned to one, and by then who knew how long it would be before they were taken out of service, given how production of the Excelsior class was ramping up. But, he figured they were probably desperate for personnel.
